Westward Ho!

In preparation (for the preparation for) a hiking trip to Yosemite this August (so excited!), today I went to EMS and enlisted the services of a soft-spoken, rugged-looking man in the style of Mark Ruffalo wearing a large straw hat. This is the least glamorous outfit I've ever purchased:

EMS cargo zip-off pants, $49. They sit at the WAIST: the horror!

Smartwool socks, $19.95.

Keen Targhee II Mid hiking boots, $124.95 at EMS. Of course, then I came home and bought 'em online for $88.99, for a savings of, oh, about two and a half more pairs of socks.

Now, anyone got any tips on hikes within an hour or two of NYC so I can try these babies out?

Hey, at least it isn't snowing in August right? I went to Yosemite for a week in March, and lived in a wood cabin with open (!) windows (no glass!) and hiked in 6 feet of snow at Crane Flat. I had to wear thick wool socks and lots of layer-sweater, tees, thermal underwear. Not the best style.

This is maybe my least favorite post EVER.

They may not be the prettiest, but Smartwool socks are the best for hiking and camping. My entire outdoorsy, hunting, fishing family swears by them. And they do make cuter prints for women, if you must buy some.

This is a funny post because I am a "fashion designer" in the "outdoor" industry, and I actually worked for EMS when these pants were designed. I can proudly say I had nothing to do with them & wouldn't be caught dead in them. I only designed outerwear. I live up in the woods & hills of NH, and am VERY outdoorsy, and now work from home as a freelance designer. I wear things LIKE this almost daily. So let me tell you, thank you for shopping at my alma mater, but there are better options for cute hiking clothes. The functionality of zip off pants are great, but don't understand why I can't find a brand that makes them in a great stretchy fabric, in a fit that doesn't come up to your waist. I'll work on this! But Athleta, Lucy, Isis, & Patagonia all offer great pant & short options in cute silhouettes & great fabrics. You may pay more, but will at least be happy with the purchase. This pant from Athleta is one of my favorites: http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=53610&vid=&pid=683761&scid=683761032

Have a great trip! Cheers!
