I'm gonna pat myself on the back as I proudly admit that I'm pretty much TOO YOUNG to remember "Tron." AHEM! Yay, me! I only really know that it was the past's creepy concept of the future, and because there was no Internet, I guess everyone believed it, and what happens in the movie is  a computer named HAL kills everybody, including Harrison Ford's and Jeff Bridges' characters, because it knew secrets about the government, and that Journey did the soundtrack, right? Maybe I'll watch it on an iPad for ultimate post-modern irony.

Anyway, Tron: Legacy is being released in December 2010, and Disney Consumer Products is releasing a small collection of super-sweet Tron-inspired couture accessories. Such as...

Spotlight: Laurel Wells Jewelry

Laurel Wells must be one of the coolest fashion designers ever to grace my inbox. After three years as head of apparel design for Hayden-Harnett (the amazing fall 2010 collection was her last for the line, a Fashion Binge fave many years over), the designer is returning to the solo game with a new collection of amazing statement necklaces inspired by Native American crafts. Each unique piece is a handmade gem of dip-dyed rayon accentuated with soft feathers, barely there chains, and/or cool beading. These necklaces are meant to steal the show—wear them with just a white tee and a simple skirt, and you are fabulous. Covetousness starts now:

Hayden-Harnett: Surprise Sample Sale!

I left the last Hayden-Harnett sample sale empty-handed, but they made up for it with this sale. They announced it on Tuesday afternoon on Facebook, but sadly I wasn't able to get down to the Nolita store until last night after work. It was obvious from the largely empty racks and the disaster-zone dressing room that they'd had quite a crowd during the day. Amazingly enough, the sale featured actual samples from the fall 2010 line, meaning mostly small sizes. And yet...she shoots, she scores!


The salesgirl was sort of instrumental in convincing me to buy this cool bomber, the Cromwell jacket, in charcoal herringbone. It also comes in brown (below, far left):



Only $60, and guess what it retails for? $538! Jeebus. (Methinks H-H's price points are a wee bit high, but their sample-sale prices, in this case, were just right.) In any case, I win. Is it time for wool jackets yet?



I also got a cozy, cropped sweater vest (above right, worn open). Love that scoop neck! And the zipper! Needed no convincing. $60. No word on retail price, as it's not on the H-H site yet. After a long, annoying day, that's what you call retail therapy, folks.

The sample sale is at the Nolita store in NYC, on Elizabeth between Houston and Prince, and runs through Sunday, from 12-8 each day. Everything is $20-$70. Long live Hayden-Harnett!

The Total Franklin Street Immersion, Y'all

I am somewhat weirdly excited about what's in store (pun intended!) for me this afternoon. My friend Amy and I, and with any luck our man-friends, will be hitting Greenpoint for the Total Franklin Street Immersion, a come-to-the-neighborhood push that involves a punch card, store discounts, and drink specials.



Drinking and shopping on a sunny Saturday! What could be better? I'm psyched. Read all about it at Brooklyn Based, who planned the whole shebang.



I'm hoping Dalaga has these cute swingy shorts, $58 (with 10 percent off today) and that they look cute on me. (UPDATE: They did, and they do.) I'm also looking for a change purse (didn't find), some new sunglasses (ditto), and maybe a new book at Word (I got Let the Great World Spin and The Girl Who Played With Fire). And it's 30 percent off at Binge enabler Hayden-Harnett (I got a skirt and a dress from their Cheap Thrills Pop-up Shop or whatever it's called for a grand total of $70...cheap thrills indeed!). Wish me luck!

I'm also hoping they don't run out of beer (I only got one mini beer, and even though I filled out my entire card, I didn't get a tote bag of gifts because they ran out.) Free Brooklyn Summer Ale!

Hayden-Harnett Blowout Sale On This Rager Of A Skirt

Oh, devil! Stop guiding my hand riiiiiiight to the Hayden-Harnett Secret Santa sale, where this BLUE RIBBON of a patchwork skirt is marked down from $305.00 to $76.25. When I sleep, I DREAM in Hayden-Harnett's pretty prints and colors.

Hayden-Harnett: The Love Affair Continues

With a $400 security-deposit check in hand from a recent vacation rental, a.k.a. free money, I headed on down to Nolita at lunch today for the Hayden-Harnett studio and warehouse sale. And, as usual with one of their sales, they give you good price! One girl (possibly from Racked?) was doing some serious reporting, using her iPhone's recording feature to take notes on the cost of seemingly every single item in the store, a practice that would seem to miss the point: shoppping! (Hope you got something, intrepid reporter!) Rest assured that although the store is small and there doesn't seem to be the volume of stuff as at previous sample sales, there are deals: wallets for $40, dresses for $70, leather bags for $100 and up. My loot:


Hayden-Harnett Athena tote, regular price $548; sale price $219. I've been coveting a gorgeous gray bag for a couple of years now, and this one fits my criteria, which is basically: big and beautiful. It has no fewer than three compartments and plenty of pockets. And the cherry on top? The lining, in the "Boudoir" print, which you might recall I bought in scarf form a while back:



My other purchase was a gorgeous, classic black tote—again with a wowee lining:



The Hayden-Harnett Athena tote, regular price $464; sale price $186. I love the large outer pocket, the rivets, and most especially the swirly lining in bright green, blue, and white. Absolutely gorgeous, and perfect for work. And these bags will last me years, maybe even "forever" as the salesgirl assured me.

I'm almost tempted to check out the selection at the Greenpoint store....

Hayden-Harnett, that's ENOUGH out of you. STOP creating the type of marvelous metal-and-leather studded pieces -- like the Corrine studded leather necklace in grape -- that I would create if I were so inclined. It reminds me of bad-ass broken glass, and also reminds me that I have a wedding to pay for. Can I just pay someone to stand over my shoulder and slap my hand away from my mouse every time I almost buy something? If I paid you per slap, you'd be rich beyond your wildest dreams. Wait a second... instead of hiring that kind of disciplinarian, why don't I just BUY THIS NECKLACE? GOD, MY POWERS OF DEDUCTIVE REASONING SHOWCASE THE FACT THAT I'M NOTHING SHORT OF A FUCKING BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL MIND!

One More for the Hayden-Harnett Haul?

Dudes, should I go BACK to the Hayden-Harnett sale and hope this scarf is there tomorrow, possibly for a lower price (their online sale is always pricier), or get it now now now? I was deterred as I often am by retail price being inflated by shipping and tax, such that a $35 scarf comes out to almost $50. It's a thing that makes you go hmmmm.


But I did see this scarf on one of the ladies at the sale today, and it was really quite striking. Boudoir scarf sample, $35.


Cuuuuuuuuuuute! Yeah, I guess you could say I like the brand.

p.s. The swimsuit fits and looks great! Yay!

Hayden-Harnett Sale: Hey, It's Only $30 Edition

Going on day two of a sample sale is never a good idea. Unlike the huge basement o' bags that was their last sample sale, the showroom was, well, "well-stocked" would be not be the word. There were a few bags, a few $50 wallets, a couple of $60 leather vests, but it was clear that the early birds did some damage yesterday. I heard one worker saying they might have more stuff tomorrow, "depending on what they dig out of the warehouse." O, to know the location of said warehouse! Didn't sound promising, though. I did okay, although I was really going for small accessories and came up short on that front (lots of bronze and patent—yucky). Here's what I did walk away with:



I looooove this Laurel leather trim party dress, which is no longer available but which I coveted from behind my computer screen when it was retailing for about $400. I picked it up for a cool $30 despite it being too big around the waist. I think I'll take this opportunity to audition that Chinatown tailor I've heard good things about.



I also grabbed this maillot, only in black (sadly). It was only $20, and I figured, hey, black is chic, why not? Maybe I'll pretend to be chicly vacationing on the French Riviera this summer while I am eating Twizzlers by the pool in my dad's New Jersey condo development.

Hayden-Harnett Gets Ripped Off

Check it out: Copycats have discovered our fave local small fashion label. In a major, major way. Observe:



On the left you have Hayden-Harnett's extremely cute Iskia link wedge sandal; on the right you have Shoes for Lovely People's (admittedly, also cute) version. Hayden-Harnett is hoppin' mad, justifiably. The H-H originals are only $100 more though. I'd kinda rather spend the extra dough — or wait for one of 'em to go on sale.

Luckily, they have loyal eagle-eyed fashion fans, who also spotted this travesty:



On the left, H-H's awesome Havana hobo, of which I have one (which I LOVE). On the right, a crappy fake-leather version by Bandolino, available at Herzberger (whatever that is), identical down to the tiny studs on the zipper pull. Horbzburger. (Though I kinda dig the turquoise color.) One's $500; one's $66. The Havana is supersoft and lovely — if you don't have a spare $500 laying around, wait for a sample sale. It's worth it.
